Introduction

The profession of lawyer is one of the most demanding and respected vocations in the legal world.

In France, the path to access it is clearly marked, rigorous, and requires several years of study and intensive preparation. If you have the ambition to plead one day before the courts, here is everything you need to know about the journey to follow, from the first years of law school to taking the oath.

Law studies: the essential foundation

It all starts with law school. After the baccalauréat (high school diploma), the future lawyer enrolls in a law degree (Bac+3), then continues towards a Master 1 in law (Bac+4). It is this Master 1 diploma that constitutes, in the classical pathway, the minimum level required to be able to take the entrance exam for a law school.

During these first four years, students acquire solid foundations in civil law, criminal law, public law, business law, civil and criminal procedures, and many other subjects. This knowledge is not simply theoretical: it forms the foundation on which the CRFPA exam is based. Some students choose to continue to Master 2 to deepen a specialty; business law, tax law, family law, criminal law, etc., which can also strengthen their application and their technical level during the exam.

It is important to note that the number of attempts at the exam is limited to three in total. In other words, preparation cannot be taken lightly.

Preparing effectively: why use a CRFPA prep course?

The CRFPA exam is selective and cannot be improvised. Mastery of university courses, however solid, is generally not enough. What the exam evaluates above all is method: knowing how to write a synthesis note according to the rules, structuring a legal essay within a limited time, mastering the reflexes expected by the examiners.

This is where specialized prep courses come in. Among them, the CRFPA prep course Cap'Barreau has built a solid reputation since its creation in 2001. What distinguishes Cap'Barreau from other structures is its resolutely human and pedagogical approach: classes are deliberately limited to 25 students maximum, which allows personalized and targeted follow-up for each candidate.

Far from "prep factories", Cap'Barreau focuses on the quality of teachers, all specialized in CRFPA preparation, on pedagogical content sent physically to students, and above all on personalized corrections of all papers.

The prep course offers several formulas to adapt to each person's profile and constraints:

  • Intensive summer formula in Paris: ideal for complete immersion before the September exams.
  • Intensive summer formula online: same intensity, but remotely.
  • Summer formula online for repeat candidates: program adapted for candidates taking the exam a second time.
  • Semester formula online: to spread preparation over several months.
  • Mock exams formula online: to practice intensively on real subjects, under exam conditions.

Whatever formula is chosen, the objective remains the same: to acquire the automatisms and methodological rigor that make the difference on the day of the exam.

The CRFPA: the gateway to the profession

The CRFPA (Regional Center for Professional Training of Lawyers) refers both to the institution, that is, the law school, and, by extension, the national exam allowing access to it. It is the decisive step in the journey. Without passing this exam, it is impossible to enter a law school and, consequently, to practice the profession.

The CRFPA exam is national and standardized since 2017: the subjects of the written exams are developed by a national commission, thus guaranteeing fairness between all candidates, regardless of their university. See the exam program.

The written admissibility exams

The exam includes four written exams, which are generally held in early September:

  • The synthesis note (5 hours, coefficient 3): the flagship exam, it evaluates the candidate's ability to analyze, prioritize and synthesize a complex documentary file, without relying on prior legal knowledge.
  • Law of obligations (3 hours, coefficient 2): fundamental subject of French civil law.
  • A specialty subject of the candidate's choice (3 hours, coefficient 2): business law, criminal law, labor law, tax law, law of persons and family, international and European law, etc.
  • Procedure (2 hours, coefficient 2): civil, criminal or administrative procedure depending on the specialty chosen.

The oral admission exams

Candidates declared admissible then proceed to the oral exams:

  • The grand oral (1 hour preparation + 45 minutes exam, coefficient 4): general legal culture exam to evaluate legal reasoning, eloquence and mastery of the great principles of law.
  • Legal English (15 minutes preparation + 15 minutes exam, coefficient 1): test of comprehension and oral expression in English in a legal context.

After the CRFPA: training at law school and the CAPA

Once the exam is passed, the candidate enters a CRFPA (the law school) for professional training lasting 18 months. This period alternates theoretical courses, practical workshops and internships in law firms.

It concludes with obtaining the CAPA (Certificate of Aptitude for the Profession of Lawyer), which is the final key allowing you to take the oath and practice as a lawyer.

Exemption routes exist for certain profiles: doctors of law are exempt from the CRFPA but must still follow training at law school and obtain the CAPA; certain experienced legal professionals can be exempt from both the CRFPA and the CAPA, under strict conditions.

A long journey, but a career without limits

From the degree to taking the oath, the journey to become a lawyer represents on average 7 years of study and training. It is a considerable investment, but one that opens up extremely varied career prospects: criminal lawyer, business law consultant, labor law specialist, business lawyer in an international firm… The opportunities are as numerous as the branches of law itself.

The key to success lies in the quality of preparation, particularly for the crucial step that is the CRFPA. Surrounding yourself with the right tools and the right trainers, as Cap'Barreau has been offering for over twenty years, can make all the difference between failure and success on the first attempt.
